Pondering Spirits
Spring 2024

Acrylic paint on wood panel
I created this piece in my Painting II class during the Spring 2024 semester at Messiah University. I painted this self-protrait for my final for the class within the span of a week. I based the image on a still from my friend’s film project, which I starred in. The short film was inspired by Wong Kar Wai’s cinematography.
I approached this peice much looser and more
The piece was chosen for the Juried Student Exhibition and was displayed over the summer in the Aughinbaugh Gallery at Messiah University.
I wanted the emphasis of the piece to be on the illuminated glasses that reflected light upon my face. I thought the complementary red and greens created a striking color palette and was an interesting challenge to use this recognizable color combo in a new way. During the process, I would work on the face, then move to the glasses, and then to the shirt, making sure the whole painting developed at the same rate.
The piece was chosen by the professors for the Juried Student Exhibition and was displayed over the summer in the Aughinbaugh Gallery at Messiah University.
