Drypoint Self-Portrait

Spring 2025

Mechanicsburg, PA

Intaglio, ink, toned paper, chine-collé

I created this series of drypoint prints in my Intaglio class in the Spring of 2025. This was the first assignment for the class, and the instructions were to make a self-portrait using drypoint to learn about the materials and experiment with the new medium.
I began with a thumbnail sketch and used it as the basis for my drypoint. My first state was a line drawing with roulette texture (a printmaking tool used to create texture). My next states added additional elements in the background, shading to the face, and a wider range of values to the clothes.
In addition to my black and white states progressing the plate, I also created artist proofs. Artist proofs mean there is only one kind of print made as opposed to an edition where they all look identical. I created an artist proof with the blue ink and another with the red shirt using a paper layering technique called Chine Collé.
In addition to my black and white states progressing the plate, I also created artist proofs, leaning there's only one made. I created an artist proof with the blue ink and another with the red shirt using a paper layering technique called Chine Collé.
I created over 10 states of my plate and pushed the plexiglass to the breaking point.
