Branding the Beatitudes

Spring 2025

Mechanicsburg, PA

Graphic design

I created this triptych for my final for Text and Image in the Fall of 2024 while studying abroad in Orvieto, Italy. I began my piece with drawing thumbnails of three possible compositions, ultimately landing on a close-up of faces, hands, and a full-body composition. I then roughly blocked in the lights and shadows of each composition, making sure the proportions were accurate. I primarily worked in vine charcoal and added black conté later in the process for the darkest values and white conté for the highlights. I also worked on pre-stained paper I tinted with coffee because I wanted to use white conté. I continued to refine the drawings by adding more values, shadows, and details with charcoal. I had two weeks to complete the drawings because the class exhibited our finals in our studio.
After the drawings were completed, the triptychs were displayed at the end-of-semester show, Mostra. After the semester, my pieces were exhibited in the GIO gallery because the program bought the drawings from me.
